Introduction to “Eating Our Way through the Gospel of Luke”

Our next sermon series starting June 9th!

“The Son of Man came eating and drinking,” Luke 7:34

The Gospel of Luke has more references to eating, drinking, food, and what happens around food than any other Gospel. Many of these references are exclusive to Luke. He uses at least 45 different words to express his theme of food.

New Testament scholar Robert Karris writes, “In Luke’s Gospel Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.”

Jesus sets an inclusive table. Who He chose to eat with and how He did His eating are what ultimately got Him killed. Jesus came as a babe, as vulnerable as any other human, and is placed in a manger, a place of food for the humblest beasts. From beginning to end it is at great cost that Jesus sets for us a banquet table in the presence of enemies. What mercy and grace we will find as we eat our way through the Gospel of Luke!
